Can common sense be beaten into a corrupt slug like Ailing Cannon?
My dad used to talk about beating some sense into this hippie or that or anyone whom he deemed to be devoid of the basic, common sense he thought they should have.
It was something he said in the vein of If you want something to cry about, I'll give you something to cry about, expressing more frustration than strategy. Obviously, the person crying already had something to cry about.
We've all felt that level of frustration at one time or another, blurting out empty threats and/or meaningless parables. We may have gotten to the point though, where beating sense into an individual seems like the only available option to remedy a particularly nasty situation.
Case in point, Columbian-born, District Court Judge Ailing (sic) Cannon. If you do not feel like slapping that goofy, smirking face of hers every time you see her picture, then you may not be paying attention.
I've written before about this judicial abomination, the most recent being, Should we call Aileen Cannon judge or madam?
This particular judge is not a loose cannon, just completely and insidiously malfunctional. Two federal judges, including Cecilia M. Altonaga, chief judge of the Southern District of Florida asked Ms. Cannon to step aside and let a more senior judge take the Trump document case.
Despite her inexperience and lack of understanding of the basic issues at play, Cannon refused to step aside. She had her marching orders and perhaps promises of a multi-million dollar payout and a seat on the Supreme Court, maybe even Clarence Thomas's seat.
Harlan Crow has only so much room in his pockets for Supreme Court judges.
For Cannon's most recent time killer, special counsel Jack Smith skipped the legalese in his filing for a gag order on Trump's non-stop calls for violence against those whose official duties include investigating and/or prosecuting any part of his crime wave.
Citing an attack on an FBI office in Cincinnati and death threats to FBI agents, Smith's entreaty pleaded that common sense alone would dictate ending the kind of vitriol that incited the January 6 attack on our Capitol and violence against election workers, elected officials and members of law enforcement.
It would have been truly myopic for us to expect anything intelligent, rational or even understandable coming out Ms. Cannon's courtroom and even though our very low expectations prevented any major disappointment, her ignorance, corruption and lack of shame have driven many of us to the point of barely controllable frustration.
As expected, Cannon asked to hear more about stuff she should have ruled on months ago, without any hearings or delays. Perhaps the most frustrating part is that she doesn't care what you (or I) think. In the Trump era of lawlessness, there are no consequences, just a power-at-all-costs agenda, which currently demands a return to the White House of a convicted felon.
It may not be possible to beat sense - common or otherwise - into a human being, but in the case of Ailing Cannon, isn’t it worth a try?
