Are Trump supporters "deplorable" or "garbage"?
Is there a third choice? Are the two mutually exclusive?
Back in 2016, Hillary Clinton committed the high crime of calling Trump supporters a basket of deplorables, a cleverly descriptive phrase that writer, Tom Rachman later turned into a book title.
Secretary Clinton's exact words were ... you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamophobic—you name it. And unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.
While Hillary's comments were largely on point, it seemed absurd to me to think that you could get that many assholes into one basket, but I can, on occasion take things too literally.
Bear in mind that those comments came more than a year after Dumbass came down that escalator and labeled Mexican immigrants to be murderers and rapists and declared war on the radical Left who were out to destroy America.
Republicans’ phony moral outrage used to be somewhat amusing, now I just look at them and try to manifest lightning strikes, mostly to no avail.
After almost a decade of listening to Donnie hurl every imaginable pejorative, including a few that are completely unintelligible, his pet hamster opened up a rally for him in New York City and called Puerto Ricans garbage.
The word is nothing new, Donnie’s been calling America garbage throughout this campaign. Directing it at a specific group of Americans though, finally got our attention.
Like the racist in chief, alleged comedian Tony Hinchcliffe may also be unaware that Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, as are millions of Black, Brown, Yellow and yes, even queer people.
That is what makes America great. That is why America IS great. And for the purpose of this discussion, soy puertorriqueño.
Angrily responding to Hinchcliffe's (xenophobic? racist?) remark, President Joe Biden said, The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters. His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American. It’s totally contrary to everything we’ve done, everything we’ve been.
Whatever President Biden meant to say, his actual words are not entirely wrong. No one in Madison Square Garden walked out because of Hinchcliffe's despicable remarks, most of them just laughed.
It is, after all, Trump supporters who attacked our Capitol, tried to hang Mike Pence, attacked election workers and continue to threaten and intimidate secretaries of state, election officials and voters not of the White persuasion.
If that isn't garbage, I don't know what is.
President Biden has a long, long history of being amicable and slow to burn. He has endured a lot in this election cycle and the combined corruption of our Congress, our Supreme Court and the entire Trump entourage has got to be gnawing at his insides. Let's just say he may have misspoke and leave it at that.
Repugnants, however, who have normalized everything from pussy-grabbing, sexual assault, disrespect of our military, insurrection, treason, espionage and oligarchy to lying and extreme political violence getting their thongs in a bunch over a word like garbage elevates hypocrisy to an Olympic event.
It would appear that Secretary Clinton is once again vindicated. They really are deplorable.
